For those who aren’t familiar with the tale ofStar Wars Battlefront III,grab yourmidnight dustand gather around the campfire. Initially, reportedly in 2006, Free Radical Design (now known as Crytek UK) was tasked by LucasArts to develop a third entry to the widely successfulBattlefrontseries.

In 2009, there were rumblings of afull cancellation of the project, for completely unknown reasons — rumors started to fly that Pandemic Studios was taking back developmental duties, but they quickly denied the claim. Some time later we learned that the real reason for the cancellation was because it waskilled by Lucasarts “psychopaths”.

Fast forward to 2012, and we’re still fawning over the project. If you’re so inclined, nearly a full hour of new footage has surfaced for LucasArt’s ill-fatedBattlefront III. One of the major features of the game was the ability to seamlessly fly starships from ground battles up into space on the same map.

As aStar Warsfan, I can’t help but wonder how this game would have turned out. Even if it was released to poor critical reception, I know that my friends and I would have played this into the morning light on more than one occasion. Oh well.
