New pricing experiment
GOG.com is putting on a little “pricing experiment” which sees $5.99 games dropped to $3.99 each, includingMyst: Masterpiece Edition,RollerCoaster Tycoon, andEmpire Earth. Additionally, a handful of $9.99 titles have been reduced to $6.99, such asEvil Genius,The Incredible Machine,King’s Bounty, andWarlords Battlecry III.
“We’d like to offer you the best games in history on PC & Mac for the most affordable prices, but we need to fund testing, coding, bundling, and securing rights to even more classics,” reads the post. “So we want to see if this brings us and our partners more money overall, even though there’s less per individual sale. That’s the argument we’d like to make, but we’ll see what the results from you guys actually are as we try out our new price points.”
While some of the featured games are terrific, I would think that to truly hit the absurd levels of increased revenue despite the lower asking price, it would take even steeper discounts. At least, I don’t think publishers on Steam go for 75 percent off — or higher — for fun.
